Megan Spence – Lean and Strong!

“I have tried a lot of different diets, paleo, low carb, etc., but this is honestly the one that worked and I stuck with. I also don’t feel like I’m missing out or starving, I feel great and always eat yummy food!  I was hesitant at first as I thought I could just do it on my own. Clearly I couldn’t as I had 27 years to do it and never did.”

Megan joined Mission Nutrition through a Challenge going on at her CrossFit box near Regina – CrossFit CO2.  There is nothing we love to see more as coaches then having someone eat more food (but structured, balanced, and consistently) and see the pounds drop off.  This girl crushes it in the gym (even more now ;)) and looks the role!  I’m so proud of her!  Great things ahead for her!   Megan is still checking in with Coach Lindsey and has transitioned to maintenance where she is now really eating all the foods and maintaining her weight and continuing her goals of getting stronger and staying lean to be in the best shape to perform.

Megan’s Mission Nutrition story:

1. What results have you seen from Mission Nutrition, where are you with your goals?

I have seen incredible results since starting Mission Nutrition. My initial goal was to get down to 127lbs and I honestly believed I would lose some strength losing the weight, but I was ok with that to reach my first goal. I thought, after I reach my weight goal my next goal was going to be to gain that strength and more back. To my surprise I hit my goal weight by losing 15lbs AND I got stronger in the process!!! This feels incredible and motivates me even more! My new goals are to maintain a weight around 130 and hit some new PR’s this year!

2. What have you learned from this program?

I have learned that I thought I knew more about food then I actually do. I learned so much about what is in foods and how easy it is too overeat fat or even protein. A 6oz steak is a lot smaller than you think!! I learned that my body feels so much better eating exactly what it needs instead of over or under eating. I can’t believe how much my energy has increased at the gym; 10 burpees used to feel so hard and now that’s an easy warm-up.

3. Was this program a big learning curve for you or were you close just needed to final puzzle piece to your nutrition?

This program was a big learning curve in terms of nutrition and the quantity of food I was eating. I always thought if I just stick with a high protein, low carb diet (still eating as much as I want) I would get strong and lose weight. I was also under the impression that I worked out often enough that I could eat whatever I wanted and not gain weight, I was definitely WRONG! Nutrition was a major missing puzzle piece in my pursuit of health. Now that I eat what my body needs, including carbs, it has not only improved my gym performance extensively but also my daily moods and my sleep.

4. Is there anything you learned or did anything happen while on MN that was unexpected?

The biggest unexpected thing I think was the improvement on how I feel waking up in the morning. I honestly wake up feeling fresh and happy, not grogggy and grumpy anymore!

5. What do you specifically like the most?

I love my body! Not only how it looks but what it can do!

6. How important did you feel the accountability with your coach was to your success?

The accountability was HUGE!! Having someone to guide me, help me and having to be honest too was a huge part of my success. It’s so easy to cheat or not when you don’t have to tell anyone about it. Having to report everything and take pictures every week really pushed me to want to impress my coach which helped me stay on track.

7. Did/do you have any struggles?

On a trip to Texas while on MN enjoying the BBQ and wine!

My biggest struggle was when I went to my parents. My mom is probably the best cook in the world and it was hard for me to say no. I always felt guilty if I refused something or I felt bad if I needed to make my food different then everyone else. What I learned was, my family is always going to support my success and I didn’t need to feel that way when I went there. I could still enjoy my time with family and eat my moms cooking while making healthier choices (no sauce, less dessert, etc.). Not only did I personally gain more control while being there, by being more health conscience and showing control in my eating I have also encouraged my family to do the same!

8. How did this program differ from others you may have tried?

The best and biggest difference is this is the only one that actually worked . I have tried a lot of different diets, paleo, low carb, etc. But this is honestly the one that worked and I stuck with. I also don’t feel like I’m missing out or starving, I feel great and always eat yummy food!

9. Did you have any hesitations about signing up? Were you reluctant about anything?

I was hesitant at first as I thought I could just do it on my own. Clearly I couldn’t as I had 27 years to do it and never did.

10. Aesthetics and clothes fitting better aside, what other things have you noticed with your success on the program?

The biggest successes I have seen is losing weight, but gaining strength. For example, I could barely clean 130lbs before the program and now with 15lbs less body weight I can clean 140lbs for multiple reps! I used to only be able to 1 strict pull-up and now I can do 4!

Thanks Megan!
