Learning To Lift & Fuel From a Young Age: Jessica’s CrossFit & Nutrition Story

At Fitness Lair, we are constantly inspired by the incredible journeys of our members and this was has a special place in our hearts.

Today, we’re thrilled to share the story of Jessica Thomas. What started as overcoming the “freshman 15” led to discovering a newfound love for fitness and nutrition.

Jessica’s story is a testament to how laying a healthy foundation of fitness and nutrition is so important from early on and having the right guidance can really create a healthy lifestyle that lasts.

Read on to hear Jess’s own words:

Starting this program was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

It was the summer before I started my pharmacy degree. I had already been in university for 2 years and had the typical “freshman 15”. Living away from home and having to learn how to balance school, cooking for myself and staying active was tough. 

I grew up eating a pretty balanced diet. My mom has a degree in nutrition, so she always made sure we ate well and had occasional treats.

Activity wise, I wouldn’t say I was the most athletic kid, but I did get some exercise through dance classes. Sports never really appealed to me and gym class was my least favourite part of the day. I can remember absolutely dreading anytime we had to do any type of fitness testing. 

 After graduating, I started tagging along with mom to CrossFit classes at Fitness Lair. I can remember how weak and out of shape I felt when I first started. The more I went the easier it got, but it wasn’t until I started Mission Nutrition that I saw a real change.

From day one, I never really had a “goal weight” or end target to reach. I just wanted to feel good in my body and become a healthier person.

Over the years I have learned how to properly fuel my body. I am so thankful for Lindsey and everything she has taught me.

Learning to eat enough to help me build strength and become an athlete is something I never expected. I am doing things in the gym now that teenage me wouldn’t have even imagined was possible.

Although my weight has gone down over the years, the change hasn’t been huge, but the change in my body composition is crazy.

I look and feel like a completely different girl and it has given me so much confidence.

I feel grateful to have started this program at the age that I did as now I feel like I’m set up for success for the rest of my life. And to be honest, I wish I would have started when I was younger.

I think all young girls (and guys) should learn about nutrition and the importance of fuelling their bodies adequately. 

It’s hard to believe I did this program for 7 years, but it’s been the best time. I’ve done it all from cuts to gains and maintenance in between.

I will take everything I learned to keep fuelling my body and getting stronger. 

Jessica’s journey is a powerful reminder that a transformation does not come from just eating less and working out more.

Long term success doesn’t come from throwing something at the wall and hoping it sticks, like trying fasting, keto, no sugar, the diet your coworker said helped them drop 10 lbs in 2 weeks, or the last supplement that girl you used to go to high school with is now raving about on social media.

But rather, long term success comes from a structured but flexible plan focusing on the individuals needs and helping them and build sustainable habits that become their way life over time.

It has been so fun to watch Jess go from the quiet girl watching her mom do the hard workouts rather than participating to becoming who she is today. She is intelligent, funny, strong as hell, self motivated, and an inspiration to all of us!

We hope her story motivates others, especially young girls (and boys!) to learn the foundation early on to set you up for a lifetime of success!
